drug card fun

2006-01-25 - 10:29 p.m.

So, for clinicals, we have to make drug cards. Every week, when we get our new patient, we make cards for every drug they're on. They're a pain in the ass, but ultimately, really good. I mean, they'll be great for future reference and everything - making them is tough though. Each one takes 20-30 minutes and when you've got a patient on 14 drugs, that's a lot of effing time. So, i'm currently in the midst of making this week's drug cards and, in my drug book, i came across this contraindication: Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug, those who have experienced adverse reactions to phenothiazines, newborns, premature neonates, breast-feeding women, and acutely ill or deyhdrated children.
When i first read it, i thought i had to be careful of any patients who have had adverse reactions to newborns and premature neonates, etc. And, i'm still quite confused as to why it is they really need to say, "breast-feeding WOMEN". they also say "pregnant women" in other places. couldn't they just say, "contraindicated in pts who are pregnant or breast-feeding." not quite sure where the word 'women' is really all that important. hell, if they took it out of the book every time they talked about breast-feeders or pregnant people, it'd probably only be 1300 pages instead of 1394 pages.
that is all for my delightful observations in the world of nursing graduate school. this is probably it for the week, too. i have no time anymore, in case you haven't figured that out. i get up, go to school, come home, do work and go to sleep. and half the time, i am struggling to keep up with the work we need to do. it's okay though - we're all in the same boat.
